  4.     MOVING TARGET. After a national outcry, George Bush last
  5. month banned imports of assault-style semiautomatic rifles. But
  6. instead of backing tougher federal controls on U.S.-made
  7. semiautomatics, Bush will propose building more prisons and
  8. harsher laws against criminal use of firearms. He came to the
  9. decision after the National Rifle Association lobbied him last
  10. week.

  12.     WHIPLASH. If embattled House Speaker Jim Wright is ousted,
  13. almost everyone agrees, Majority Leader Tom Foley will take his
  14. place. Which should put Democratic House Whip Tony Coelho in
  15. line to succeed Foley. Not necessarily. Democratic Caucus
  16. Chairman Bill Gray has been cool to Coelho since a bitter 1984
  17. rules fight in the Budget Committee. Dan Rostenkowski, powerful
  18. head of the Ways and Means Committee, is said to view Coelho as
  19. a pal of John Dingell, Rostenkowski's longtime congressional
  20. rival. Rostenkowski might throw 25 to 35 votes he controls to
  21. Beryl Anthony of Arkansas or Ed Jenkins of Georgia.

  24.     I REMEMBER YOU. John Buckley was a great press secretary
  25. for Jack Kemp during last year's Republican primaries. Just ask
  26. George Bush, who was the recipient of some of his quips. Bush
  27. remembers them so well that he ruled out a job for Buckley in
  28. the new Administration. Buckley -- nephew of William F. -- had
  29. to settle for a position as spokesman for the National
  30. Republican Congressional Committee.

  33.     THE TANKER WAS THREE-QUARTERS FULL. White House Chief of
  34. Staff John Sununu is complaining that news media coverage of the
  35. Alaska oil spill focused almost exclusively on the 240,000 bbl.
  36. of crude that polluted more than 800 miles of coastline.
  37. Reporters, he says, should have paid more attention to more than
  38. 1 million bbl. that didn't escape from the ruptured Exxon
  39. Valdez, thanks to an early emphasis on keeping the ship from
  40. breaking up and pumping off its cargo. "Three-quarters of it was
  41. contained within the ship," Sununu pointed out. "There's been
  42. very little reporting on that."
